A View from Our Past – Our Beginnings
The SIxties
The “Sixties” period marks my personal involvement with this church. My three young daughters and I moved to Linden Avenue as I was working in Suffolk. We attended church the first Sunday and were greeted with Christian love by many people. On Monday, Mrs. Virginia Griffin called on us and Mrs. Carver came with cookies! We found welcoming and loving Christians at West End who have become our dear Christian friends.
At that time, the Rev. Bailey Jones was minister and Conrad Pyler was organist. There were 492 resident members and 113 non-resident. During the sixties, our church purchased what is now our parking lot and began the Memorial Trust. Also, air conditioning was installed in the sanctuary. We had Sunday evening services as well as morning, and also youth organizations for all ages.
When the Rev. Bailey resigned, our church called the Rev. Donald Dunlap, who served us well for many years and in doing so, carved a special place in our hearts.
