A View from Our Past –

Our Beginnings

The 1970's at West End Baptist Church were important to my family because Mary and I joined West End Baptist Church in August, 1973.  The blessings to us that God has provided through West End Baptist Church continue after 30 years.

Reverend Donald Dunlap led the church well throughout the entire decade.

Interesting statistics during the decade were the proposed budget for 1970 which was $50,512; for 1980, $110,400.   Sunday school enrollment for 1970 was 293 with an average attendance of 123; for 1979, an enrollment of 209 with an average attendance of 203.  Total membership for 1970 was 601; for 1979, 573.

The church facilities had several significant changes during the 70's.  The kitchen and “little kitchen” were renovated and added, respectively.  The parking lot was paved.  Sconces were added in the sanctuary.  Cushions were placed on the pews.  The educational building was air-conditioned.  The chancel was renovated and dedicated in 1978.

Events of note in the 70's were the nation’s bi-centennial in 1976, and the church’s 50th anniversary on March 11, 1979.  West End Baptist Church celebrated the nation’s birthday by having then Congressman, William G. Whitehurst, give the Sunday morning message on July 11, 1976.  The 50th anniversary celebration, chaired by Andy Anderson and Wayland Pond, III, was highlighted by the morning message from former pastor, Reverend Julian Pentecost.

God blessed West End Baptist Church, as he always has, in significant ways in the 1970's.
