A View from Our Past – The Nineties
Our nineties were documented by progressive decisions and mission projects. We packed and sent supplies for Hugo victims in 1990. In 1991, a motion was made and approved to include women in the deacon nominations starting in 1992. In November 1992 the first women were nominated: Mary Lawrence Harrell and Joyce Mauck. They were elected and served the 1993-95 term. Sylvia Pond served in a later term and was the first woman Deacon Chairman. In 1992 our church dedicated new hymnals to use in our services. At the 1992 annual conference committee members reported to the church congregation that there were major concerns about the leadership and legislation of the Southern Baptist Convention. It was recommended that the congregation discuss its relationship with the SBC. A motion was made in 1999 that West End Baptist withdraw from the SBC. Intensive review and discussion began with the congregational members. (The vote to withdraw came in 2000). The church was in prayer in the 1996 for Dean Kershaw and his successful liver transplant procedure. The church decided to revive the Murphy’s Mill Property and had all ages and committees helping to clean inside and out. The Boy Scouts were very supportive in our effort, too. The church sent representatives to help at Habitat for Humanity and sent funding and supplies to the hurricane and flood victims with Dennis and Floyd in 1999. The drive for missions continued into 2000 with additional WMU circle groups being formed.
