November 2008
I was listening to one of the fall fundraisers on the radio, and my thoughts went to annual church stewardship drives. Do you ever notice the amount that puts donors in the upper level of giving in many community organizations? If I gave $1000 to a local group, I’d be noticed and probably be contacted every year thereafter. I’m concerned that people look at giving to the church just like giving to a local community organization. But we’re different! We view all that we have as a gift from God, and we are called to be good and grateful stewards of all of our resources. Over the years I’ve been asked about what I think about the “tithe”. It is an Old Testament practice, but it has merit for New Testament people too. When our family looks at what we plan to give to the church, we start with the 10% figure, not a set dollar amount. While I don’t come down heavy on what others “should” do, we practice proportional giving, and I want you know that. I strongly believe in proportional, regular giving to the church. And I strongly believe in giving from grace. All of life is a gift from God, and by God’s free gift to us in Christ we are to enjoy life and share God’s love. I believe the local church is the best way to reach out with God’s love to others. We support mission activities too, primarily through the church. West End gives more than a tithe of our budget income (14%) to missions, so I’m glad I can participate around the world by my gift to West End. As you consider your financial stewardship with the church, I challenge you to give proportionately and regularly and cheerfully. We have a great opportunity to make a difference in our community and around the world. I believe that’s exciting! One of my favorite church consultants is Kennon Callahan. I have in my office some wisdom from him that is special to me, and I hope it will be special for you: “Give thanks to God four times: once, for the gift of your life; second, for the possibilities, the strengths with which God has blessed you; third, for the capacity to grow these possibilities forward in your life’s pilgrimage; fourth, for the stirring, moving presence of God’s Spirit with you this moment. All we are and will be is the gift of God.” In what ways are you sharing God’s gift of you? (TFI) -- PS: If this sounds familiar, it first appeared in our November 2006 newsletter. I still believe it, and I think it’s still worth repeating especially in these financially anxious times!
